Entropy and Redundancy of Japanese Lexical and Syntactic Compound Verbs
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study investigated Japanese lexical and syntactic compound verbs (V1þV2) using Shannon’s concept of entropy and redundancy calculated using corpora from the Mainichi Newspaper and a collection of selected novels. Comparing combinations of a V2 verb with various V1 verbs, syntactic compounds were higher in entropy than lexical ones while neither differed in redundancy. This result suggests that V2 verbs of syntactic compounds are likely to combine with a wider range of V1 verbs than those of lexical compounds. Two exceptional V2 verbs, komu and ageru, both of which create lexical compounds, showed a wide variety of combinations with V1 and therefore act like prefixes in English. Comparing V2 verbs in the two corpora, the V2 eru, which adds the meaning of ‘‘possibility’’ to a V1, functions like the auxiliary verb ‘‘can’’ in English and seems to be a favored expression in newspapers. In contrast, the V2 komu, adds the meaning of ‘‘internal movement’’ similar to the preposition ‘‘into’’ in English and appears to be preferred in the novels to enrich the expression of lexical compounds. In general, both lexical and syntactic compounds were used similarly in both corpora.

Exploiting Lexical Conceptual Structure for Paraphrase Generation
Lexical Conceptual Structure (LCS) represents verbs as semantic structures with a limited number of semantic predicates. This paper attempts to exploit how LCS can be used to explain the regularities underlying lexical and syntactic paraphrases, such as verb alternation, compound word decomposition, and lexical derivation. We propose a paraphrase generation model which transforms LCSs of verbs,...
متن کاملThe role of Persian causative markers in the acquisition of English causative verbs
This project investigates the relationship between lexical semantics and causative morphology in the acquisition of causative/inchoative-related verbs in English as a foreign language by Iranian speakers. Results of translation and picture judgment task show although L2 learners have largely acquired the correct lexico-syntactic classification of verbs in English, they were constrained by ...
متن کاملThe two be's of English
This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study, one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular, 'copular-be', traditionally considered to be a lexical verb, is in fact a prototypi...
متن کاملReduction of Lexical Redundancy via Semantically-driven Syntactic Generalisations
Syntax cannot be handled eeectively in isolation from semantic factors. In this paper, a system is presented which models the syntactic phenomenon of dative alternation via its semantic basis. The system depends on a semantic representation that incorporates psycholinguistic insights about grammatically-relevant semantic criteria, and is implemented in an HPSG grammar in ALE. The semantic basis...

The purpose of this study is to disambiguate Japanese compound verbs (JCVs) using two methods: (1) a statistical sense discrimination method based on verbcombinatoric information, which feeds into a first-sense statistical sense disambiguation method, and (2) a manual rule-based sense disambiguation method which draws on argument structure and verb semantics. In evaluation, we found that the ru...
